Detroit Passport to the Arts Destination #1 brings you to Spain for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Rodrigo’s haunting Concierto de Aranjuez with guitar sensation Xuefei Yang, all under the baton of guest conductor Joana Carneiro. Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings’ most popular concert, Holiday Brass, blows away winter with a high-energy performance of chamber music. The concert will feature holiday favorites, little known gems and blockbuster works for chorus and brass. A holiday carol sing-a-long with brass quartet precedes the event. Don’t forget to don your ugliest holiday sweater for the after-party!

6:45 pm- Holiday Sing-Along
Raise your voice! Before the concert, join DCWS musicians and the Stoney Creek High School Choir for a sing-along of wintertime carols.

7:30 pm- Performance
Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings’ most popular concert, Holiday Brass, features seasonal favorites, little known gems and blockbuster works for chorus and brass. Performance runs 90 minutes with a 20 minute intermission.

9:30 pm- After-Party Begins
Join DP2A passport holders in Cathedral Church of St. Paul’s Barth Hall for an ugly sweater holiday party! Enjoy a hot chocolate bar, champagne punch, appetizers and festive tunes from renowned pianist and Detroit native, Alvin Waddles. Be sure to dress in your decked out holiday garb- there will be prizes for the ugliest apparel!

We suggest that you park in the Parking Structure 3, a Wayne State University owned structure near the Rackham building (see map). The cost is $5 per vehicle, credit card only (Visa/Mastercard) — NO CASH. WSU public safety has been made aware that there is an event and will be monitoring the area.

Overflow parking will be in the Detroit Science Center Lot, which is $6. Be prepared to have cash on hand. Street parking near the Cathedral will also be available, please refer to the meter for information on rates and hours of enforcement.

Messiaen’s From the Canyons to the Stars with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra

Opt in to DP2A’s first excursion experience where conductor Jeffrey Tate and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, in collaboration with Israeli filmmaker Daniel Landau, bring Messiaen’s 1971 score about America’s west alive in a new cinematic installation.

Through film images projected on multiple screens, Hill Auditorium will be turned into a multi-sensory experience celebrating the beauty of the earth and our unaltered landscapes.

If you have already purchased tickets, please call 734-763-3100 and speak with Sarah at the UMS office to reserve your seat(s) and select whether to have your ticket(s) mailed or held at will call.

7:15 pm- Pre-Screening welcome with DFT Film Curator Elliot Wilhelm

7:30 pm- Showing of Oscar-Nominated Short Films
View a combination of the 2011 live-action and animated nominated short films selected by the DP2A Steering Committee. There will be a Best Dressed contest during intermission to show off your glamorous attire. The films will show for approximately 2 hours with a 15 minute intermission. Seating is general admission.

9:45 pm- After-Party Begins
Passport holders and guests will enjoy an Old Hollywood-themed after-party complete with appetizers, drinks and live music in Prentis Court.

Hilberry Theatre’s talented graduate students transport the audience to the deep American south while telling the sultry tale of Summer and Smoke.

The after-party will feature scrumptious southern cooking and the sweet sounds from blues band Delta 5 at Traffic Jam & Snug.

There are only a few spots left to join the behind-the-scenes tour of Hilberry’s costume and scene shops! Please email Katy to reserve your spot. All tour goers should meet in the lobby of the Hilberry Theatre by 6:45 p.m.

7:15 p.m. – Pre-Performance Talk 

Gain insight to the performance at a complimentary pre-performance talk given by director Lionel Walsh, located in the Hilberry auditorium.

8:00 p.m. – Performance

In this sultry Southern tale by Tennessee Williams, Alma cannot resist her attraction to the young doctor, John, who lives next door. Though John is drawn to her, their relationship becomes an emotional battle of wills when her spiritual devotion is pitted against his sensuous need for physical desire. Neither triumphs, and in the end, roles reverse. The performance is an hour and a half with intermission.

10:00 p.m. – After-Party Begins 

Join passport holders at Traffic Jam & Snug for scrumptious southern-inspired appetizers and try one of Traffic Jam’s craft beers or the special Lynchberg Lemonade! Local blues band Delta Five will provide us with sounds from the South. Cash bar available.

Now That I Can Dance – Motown 1962

Back by popular demand!  Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit will revive its wildly successful production of the hit musical, Now That I Can Dance — Motown 1962, a toe-tapping, hip-swaying celebration of Motown, and the young men and women who made it great! The play recounts the early days of Motown, before Diana Ross reigned supreme, Little Stevie became a legend, and five young girls from Inkster, Michigan, were destined to make musical history. Signed by Motown while still students at Inkster High School, these young women (now known to the world as The Marvelettes) went on to record the first Motown song ever to reach number one on the Billboard pop charts – “Please Mr. Postman.”

Now That I Can Dance was written by Mosaic founder Rick Sperling and includes members of the community and Mosaic alumni performing side-by-side with Mosaic Youth Ensemble members.

Passport holders will experience Stravinky’s “Rite of Spring” with new choreography by Eisenhower Dance Ensemble Artistic Director Laurie Eisenhower and performed by the dancers of EDE, with pianists Elisabeth and Eugene Pridonoff, and the Percussion Group Cincinnati.
